As a person living in the US, you need to be aware of the dos and don’ts wherever you go. There is certain way you interact with people. There is an expected behavior when you to go a bank (whether it how you are dressed or how you communicate). Here, in this article, I would like to emphasize the demeanor of a student on campus.
Always be courteous. Listening is the more underrated thing. A good listener understands better. There are 3 kinds of people you interact at a university. Faculty, staff, and your peers. There is a certain demeanor that is expected of you when you interact with these people.
You are expected to communicate formally and professionally when you interact with faculty and staff. With staff, you need to be patient and courteous. With faculty, you need to extremely careful. Faculty are there to help you. That does not mean you do not respect rules. Trying to disturb them during non office hours, repeated emails about a certain issue, begging for a better grade and the list goes on. The requirements are relaxed when it comes to your peers. There are still ground rules that you need to follow. For example, public display of affection, derogatory language, bullying etc should be avoided.
If you are working for the department or the university, you have to be very careful about what you say and how you behave. I knew a male student who patted on the back of a female student to appreciate her good work. The female student ended up at the human resources filing a lawsuit. This could happen to anybody. I am not trying to scare any of you, but merely pointing out the fact that anything could happen. So, it is up to you understand the dos and don’ts!!
