Students interested in research must look into the individual faculty research interests within the degree program they are interested. This becomes another factor in choosing a certain university. Students must communicate with faculty as early as possible. Not just expressing interest but should try to volunteer. If a faculty member responds, try to accomplish some work. It could be anything that would help the faculty member. The better work you do, the better the chances of the faculty member to take the student under his/her wing.
Upon arriving at the university, some students decide to go for a thesis option. Once that decision is made, students should meet their professor of choice to discuss their research interests personally. If satisfied, students may begin working on research from the first day of their enrollment. Typically, if a faculty member is impressed with the work, an assistantship is offered.
